Twitter, Lawsuits, Sooper-Dooper Injunctions!

I blog to get people to donate to kid’s charities. I don’t want money, I want you to donate direct to a children’s charity then write to me by commenting on the blog. Please read the ‘About Lesley’ section of the blog to find out why I do this; the Comments and Running Totals pages to see how far we have come….

So, this is my post on the furore regarding Twitter and the sportsman. I am no lawyer, a fairly obvious statement. I can only write about my opinions on the  matter. There are great blogs out there on law, my personal favourite is Charon manages to make law matters interesting, amusing and, for laymen like me, understandable. Charon also references many other bloggers so that we can see a breadth of opinion…

Here goes! My first thought? What an absolute palaver! A sportsman ‘played away’, stunning news.  He may regret it deeply, many people have done stupid things in their lives and look back with shame. Others have done stupid things and don’t regret them at all, counting them as a life experience. Regardless of how he feels now, surely his actions since then are more telling. I don’t know all the circumstances but have read quite a few blogs on the matter. I don’t feel sorry for him or the ‘other woman’ in this regard. It doesn’t look as if she has covered herself in glory and I am very doubtful of her ‘I was used’ tears. She knew what she was doing at the time and there is a great lack of dignity (in my opinion) in trawling round the media talking about it. Publicity anyone?

Secondly, who cares? I really don’t care. I feel for the families involved, they are the ones who will be hurt and that is sad. For the rest of us, are we so obsessed with ‘celebrity’ that this would be important in our lives? I don’t think so. I understand why you would do it to protect any children but beyond that it must be a matter for the partners involved to either forgive or make a break and move on.

Next, this is only prolonging the story isn’t it? They used to say that today’s would be holding tomorrow’s fish and chips. This is no longer true, the internet and growth of gossip magazines means stories will be dusted off and reused for years after the event. The question is how you deal with it. When a story like this breaks, do you admit it and try to move on or do you try to protect yourself using the law. You can pick the latter but only if you have the money to spend on lawyers, plenty of money. Your potential problem is the human factor. People have been known to leak secrets, shock horror. This can happen for many reasons, malice, greed, a desire to buck the system or even simply because they can. Once the secret is out, it is very hard to put it back in the box. It is safe to say this has happened. We now hear the footballer is suing Twitter. That is his choice, I just think it isn’t the right one. If I am honest, I had already heard the name before it was tweeted, I can’t remember how but was likely from someone who had found it on the Internet. So, is Twitter to blame for taking something that was already there and recycling it? Assuming the angle for any lawsuit is that Twitter should have removed or blocked the tweeter in question is, to my mind, a wee bit daft. Block one account and twenty more will spring up.

I know there are plenty of people who use Twitter for extremely serious reasons, to build their business, to highlight their cause, to inform and educate. I use Twitter to promote this blog and it has been valuable to me as I gain and talk to new followers who very kindly read and retweet my blog – thank you all lovelies, LesleyAlmost sends you a big, fat *MWAH*.  The other side of my Twitter usage is like the majority of users, we like the craic. Twitter is a massive chatty-fest and the people can be relied on to make you laugh or cry. The majority of Tweeters I talk to are kind and supportive and will lift you after a bad day. I also find that Tweeters will take a wry look at life and will not take perceived censorship too well. The way to be talked about on Twitter is to try not to be talked about on Twitter. It is a social medium and they have changed the way the world works. If someone wants to speak on Twitter they will find a way and they will parody those who want to shut them down.

My final thought goes to those who would choose to sue Twitter, are you sure you really want to do this? Take a pause and think about it first…….

I close with my normal request to you:-

  • Donate to a valid children’s charity of your choice. It is easy to do – online, collection boxes, Give as You Earn. Any amount is important and I am delighted for one pound, dollar, euro, yen to reach a charity. Donate a present to a family or child that will not have the holiday season that you might expect and plan for.
  • Visit this blog and comment anywhere with the charity, amount including currency and please also tell me what you wanted to be when you were 8. I love the stories of childish ambitions.

I will then:-

  • Add your donation to the Totals page on this blog, totals are updated weekly.
  • I will also write some words about the current donations and the charity
  • All comments will be stored on the comments page so that you can see what charities people are interested in and also what a variety of 8-year-old ambitions we have already. I am looking forward to way more surprises from you all.

The steps are simple. Again, if you like the idea please tell others so that they will come and tell me their stories.

Take care of you and yours.

PS – I would like to thank Panovision101. He has copyright on the Sooper-Dooper. So my thanks to my fellow blogger on for allowing me my Sooper-Dooper Title!!!
